Jost Capito's first year in motorsport, 1985, ended with a desert win: he was one of the crew who won the truck category of the Dakar while working on high performance engines at BMW. Spells at Porsche, Sauber and Ford followed, and the Focus RS he pushed through development won the world rally manufacturers' title in 2006 and 2007.

At Volkswagen from 2012 he oversaw three straight seasons of rally titles for drivers and manufacturers. A short stay at McLaren in late 2016 preceded his appointment as chief executive of Williams in December 2020, and in June 2021 he also became team principal. He left at the end of 2022.
