John Surtees

British world champion on two wheels and four who founded and ran the Surtees team from 1970 to 1978

John Surtees, whose father sold motorcycles in south London, won seven motorcycle world championships, four of them on MV Agustas in the top 500cc class. He then switched to cars and in 1964 won the Formula One title with Ferrari. He remains the only person to be world champion on both two wheels and four.

In 1970 he set up his own team, the Surtees Racing Organisation, which built its own cars for nine seasons in Formula One, Formula 5000 and Formula 2. He stopped driving in 1972, the year his team enjoyed its finest success when Mike Hailwood, another motorcycle champion, won the European Formula 2 title. The team closed its doors after 1978. He died on the 10th of March 2017, aged 83.
