Jean Sage

French sporting director who ran Renault's Formula One team from its 1977 debut to its withdrawal at the end of 1985

Jean Sage collected Ferraris and raced one at 20, sharing a 250 with André Simon. With Gérard Larrousse and Paul Archambeaud he set up Écurie Elf in Switzerland in 1973, and the team took Jean Pierre Jabouille to the European Formula Two crown in 1976.

Once Larrousse was at Renault, he chose Sage to manage its new Formula One team. Sage was there from its first race, the British Grand Prix of 1977, through the first victory at the 1979 French Grand Prix and the title challenges of Alain Prost and René Arnoux in 1982 and 1983, to the withdrawal at the end of 1985. He died on the 8th of October 2009.
