Australian three time world champion who cofounded Brabham and won the 1966 title in a car bearing his name

Jack Brabham fixed aircraft as an Air Force mechanic and later kept a small workshop near Sydney before he raced midget cars on dirt ovals in 1948. In Britain he joined Cooper, helping build as well as race its rear engined cars, and took the world title in 1959 and again in 1960.

In 1962 he and his compatriot Ron Tauranac launched a marque of their own, and in the 1960s it grew into the world's biggest builder of custom racing cars. For the new three liter formula of 1966 he persuaded Repco to build him a V8, then won the French Grand Prix in his own car and the championship to go with it. No other champion has taken the title in a car bearing his name. He was knighted in 1978 and died on the 19th of May 2014.
