Gerhard Berger, from Wörgl, worked in his father's trucking company before racing. He won ten Grands Prix in 210 starts, including the first and last victories of the Benetton team eleven years apart, and drove alongside Ayrton Senna at McLaren in its title years of 1990 and 1991.

After retiring in 1997 he became BMW's competitions director, overseeing BMW's comeback to Formula One in 2000. In February 2006 he acquired half of Toro Rosso, in a deal that saw Dietrich Mateschitz buy half of Berger Logistik, the haulage company his father had founded. Toro Rosso won its first Grand Prix in 2008, with Sebastian Vettel driving, and Berger sold his share back in November that year. A truck driver's son trading part of the trucks for half a racing team is a fair exchange.
