Enzo Ferrari came to team management from the driver's seat. Born in Modena in 1898, Alfa Romeo took him on as a racing driver in 1920, and he won 11 of his 41 Grands Prix before founding Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 to race Alfa's cars. Its prancing horse honored Francesco Baracca, an Italian fighter pilot of the First World War, and the shield first decorated a car of Ferrari's own make in 1947.

He ran the Scuderia for the rest of his life, and in Formula One his cars won nine drivers' titles and eight constructors' titles while he was alive. Italians called him il Commendatore. British rivals preferred il Drake, after the English privateer, which was a compliment arriving in a pirate's hat. He died on the 14th of August 1988.
