American founder of the Shadow team, which raced in CanAm and in Formula One from 1973

Don Nichols was a combat veteran of the Second World War and Korea who served in military intelligence and then made his money as an entrepreneur in Japan. Back in the United States he founded Advanced Vehicle Systems in 1968 and in 1970 raced his first CanAm car, which he called Shadow, with a cloaked spy for a logo. It suited a former intelligence officer rather well.

Shadow took the 1974 CanAm crown with Jackie Oliver. With sponsorship from Universal Oil Products, Nichols took the team into Formula One in 1973. Jean Pierre Jarier scored third at Monaco in 1974 and took pole in Argentina and Brazil in 1975, and Tom Pryce won the Race of Champions that year by more than 30 seconds. He died on the 21st of August 2017.
