Dan Gurney built his first car at 19 in California's hot rod culture, served as an artillery mechanic in Korea, and drove for Ferrari, BRM, Porsche and Brabham, giving Brabham its first championship win at Rouen in 1964. With Carroll Shelby he founded All American Racers, named at the suggestion of Goodyear's president, and entered Formula One in 1966 with a car called the Eagle.

On the 18th of June 1967 Gurney won the Belgian Grand Prix in his own Eagle, a week after winning Le Mans with A. J. Foyt, where he began the custom of showering champagne from the podium. Only Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren have also won a championship Grand Prix in a car of their own construction. He ran All American Racers for decades afterward. He died on the 14th of January 2018.
