Scottish teacher turned manager of Jacques Villeneuve who founded British American Racing and led it from 1999

Craig Pollock was a schoolteacher, and in the early 1980s he was director of sport at a school in Villars, Switzerland, where one of his pupils was a teenage Jacques Villeneuve. Years later a chance meeting at Suzuka brought them back together, and Pollock became Villeneuve's manager, steering him from Formula Atlantic to the IndyCar title and the Indianapolis 500 in 1995, then to Williams and the 1997 world championship.

In 1998 Pollock and his partners bought Tyrrell, ran it for its final season and meanwhile built British American Racing on a fresh site, with Villeneuve as team leader. He persuaded Honda to return to Formula One with BAR in 2000, and in its second season the team finished fifth. A teacher who ends up running a Formula One team has clearly learned a thing or two from his pupils.
