English engineer who founded Lotus and ran Team Lotus to seven constructors' championships

Colin Chapman built his first racing car, a modified Austin 7, in 1948 and called it Lotus. He studied structural engineering in London and ran the company in his spare time at first, preaching a gospel of low weight and fine handling over brute power. His Lotus 25 of 1962 popularized the monocoque chassis in racing, and working alongside Peter Wright and Tony Rudd he brought ground effect to Formula One, which the Lotus 79 used to dominate 1978.

Under his direction Team Lotus took seven constructors' crowns, six drivers' titles and victory at the Indianapolis 500. He was also among the first to turn racing cars into rolling billboards for sponsors from outside the motor trade. He died of a heart attack on the 16th of December 1982, aged 54, on the day his team tested its first active suspension car.
