British engineer and businessman who cofounded the Cooper Car Company with his son John and kept it on a sound footing

Paris was where Charles Cooper was born in 1893, the son of a traveling British actor, and he served his apprenticeship at the Napier engineering works in Acton. In 1919 he opened a garage on Ewell Road in Surbiton, and that modest business became the foundation of the Cooper Car Company, which he ran with his son John.

John supplied the enthusiasm; Charles, as managing director, supplied the business sense and the stability. With Jack Brabham driving the rear engined cars, Cooper won both world titles in 1959 and 1960, and no front engined car has taken the championship since. Cooper died in October 1964, a little short of his 71st birthday.
