Carlo Chiti trained in aeronautical engineering at Pisa and joined Alfa Romeo while still a student. At Ferrari he worked on the 1958 title car and designed the 156 Sharknose, which carried Phil Hill to the 1961 championship and the team to its first constructors' crown. He left in the walkout of late 1961 for the ATS venture.

In 1964 he founded Autodelta and rekindled his link with Alfa Romeo, whose sports cars won world titles in 1975 and 1977. After a spell supplying engines to Brabham, in 1979 he started work on an Alfa Romeo of his own for Formula One. Its best season was 1983, when Andrea de Cesaris finished second twice and the team placed sixth. He later founded Motori Moderni, and died in Milan in 1994.
