New Zealand driver and engineer who founded the McLaren team and won a Grand Prix in a car bearing his own name

Bruce McLaren grew up around his parents' service station in Auckland and left his engineering course at the University of Auckland to go racing, which his student record dutifully noted. A New Zealand scholarship took him to Europe in 1958, and with Cooper he won the United States Grand Prix of 1959 at 22, a record for the youngest winner that lasted more than four decades.

He founded Bruce McLaren Motor Racing in 1963, and his own car carried him to win the Belgian Grand Prix of 1968. Only Jack Brabham and Dan Gurney had done the same. He also won Le Mans in 1966 with Chris Amon and took the CanAm title in 1967 and 1969. He was killed testing at Goodwood on the 2nd of June 1970, aged 32. The team that bears his name has since won ten constructors' championships.
