Arturo Merzario

Italian sports car winner and Ferrari driver who ran his own Merzario team from 1977 to 1979

Arturo Merzario began as a test driver for Fiat Abarth, took the 1969 Mugello Grand Prix and joined Ferrari's sports car team. The year 1972 brought him victories in the Targa Florio and the Spa 1000 km, and he scored points on his Formula One debut at the British Grand Prix that year, driving for Ferrari.

He drove for Shadow, Wolf Williams, March, Fittipaldi, Williams and Ferrari, 85 Grands Prix in all. At the 1976 German Grand Prix he was among the drivers who stopped to help Niki Lauda from his burning car, and Lauda later credited him with saving his life. In 1977 he raised enough sponsorship to start his own team, first with March cars and then with cars of his own design, competing in Formula One for three seasons. Courage on the track, it seems, was matched by courage in business.
