Andrea Stella earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering by studying how flames behave as fluids, which may be the most fitting thesis ever written by a Formula One team principal. Born in Orvieto, he started at Ferrari in 2000, working as a performance engineer, worked alongside Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen, and engineered Fernando Alonso's races between 2010 and 2014.

McLaren hired him in 2015 to run its race operations and became racing director in 2019. Named to replace Andreas Seidl ahead of the 2023 season, he led the team in his second year to its first constructors' title since 1998, then defended it in 2025 with six Grands Prix still to run.
