Alan Permane started at Benetton in 1989, working on test electronics, and spent the next three decades at the same factory in Enstone while the name over the door kept changing: Benetton, Renault, Lotus, Renault again and finally Alpine. Along the way he engineered Jean Alesi, Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella, became chief race engineer in 2007 and sporting director in 2012.

He left Alpine in the summer of 2023 and joined Red Bull's second team as racing director for 2024. Midway through 2025, when Laurent Mekies moved up to run Red Bull Racing, Permane was appointed team principal of Racing Bulls. It was, remarkably, only his second employer in Formula One.
