Alain Prost, the driver they called the Professor, won four world titles and retired at the end of 1993 holding the records for wins, fastest laps and podiums. Four years later he took on a harder assignment. On the 13th of February 1997 he acquired Ligier from Flavio Briatore and gave it his own name, Prost Grand Prix.

The next day he signed a three year engine deal with Peugeot, starting in 1998, and he kept Olivier Panis, who had won at Monaco for Ligier the year before. He became president of the team in 1998, but results were scarce: that season brought a single point, for Jarno Trulli in Belgium. Ferrari engines arrived in 2001, yet the money ran out early in 2002 and the team closed. Winning a championship, it turned out, was the simpler job.
