Tony Bettenhausen, twice a national champion in American open wheel racing, finished second in the 1955 Indianapolis 500 when it counted toward the World Championship.

Born in Tinley Park, Illinois, Tony Bettenhausen became one of the leading names in American championship car racing, winning the national title in 1951 and 1958. From 1950 to 1960 the Indianapolis 500 was part of the World Championship, and he took part every year in that period, sometimes in more than one car.

His best result came in 1955, when he shared a car with Paul Russo and finished second from second on the grid. He added fourth places in 1958 and 1959, scoring championship points both times. His last Indianapolis 500 in the championship era was in 1960, bringing his total to 13 starts in championship races. He died in May 1961.
