Third in the First Championship Race

Reg Parnell finished third in the very first World Championship race at Silverstone in 1950 and later became an influential team manager.

Born in Derby, Reg Parnell raced at Brooklands before the war and became a central figure in British motorsport after it. Alfa Romeo asked him to drive its fourth works car in the first World Championship race, the 1950 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and he finished third.

In 1951 he finished fourth in France in a Ferrari and fifth at the British Grand Prix in a BRM after starting twentieth, and he also gave BRM its first victories at Goodwood. His last championship start came at the 1954 British Grand Prix, his sixth. He later managed teams, taking Aston Martin into Formula One and running Yeoman Credit Racing. He died in 1964.
