A Shared Second at Indianapolis

Paul Russo started nine Indianapolis 500s in the World Championship era and shared the second placed car in 1955.

Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Paul Russo began racing midget cars in 1934 and was part of the Chicago Gang of midget racers. He started the 1950 Indianapolis 500, the first to count toward the World Championship, and finished ninth. He was absent from the race in 1951 and 1952.

In 1953 he was fourth, and in 1955 he shared a car with Tony Bettenhausen that finished second. Driving a Novi, he set the fastest lap in 1956 and finished fourth in 1957. His last championship start came at the 1959 Indianapolis 500, his ninth. He died in 1976.
