A Podium at Hockenheim, Then Scandal

Nelson Piquet Jr. raced for Renault in 2008 and 2009, finishing second in Germany, before the Singapore crash affair ended his Formula One career.

Born in Heidelberg and racing for Brazil, Nelson Piquet Jr. finished runner up in the 2006 GP2 Series and spent 2007 as a Renault test driver. Promoted to a race seat for 2008, he made his debut at the Australian Grand Prix and finished second at the German Grand Prix from seventeenth on the grid.

He was dropped partway through 2009 after the Hungarian Grand Prix, his 28th start. It then emerged that, on instructions from senior team members, he had crashed deliberately at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to help his teammate win, a scandal that ended his Formula One career. He went on to win the first Formula E title in 2014 to 2015 and to race stock cars in Brazil.
