Mike Hailwood, a nine time motorcycle world champion, raced in Formula One between 1963 and 1974 and finished second at Monza in 1972.

Born in Great Milton, Mike Hailwood came to cars as a motorcycle racing star, having won nine world titles and 14 Isle of Man TT races. He first tried Formula One at the 1963 British Grand Prix and drove a Lotus through 1964 while still racing bikes.

He returned to car racing in earnest with Surtees, and at the 1972 Italian Grand Prix he finished second from ninth on the grid. With McLaren in 1974 he took third in South Africa and fourth in Argentina and the Netherlands, before his last Grand Prix in Germany that year brought his total to 50 starts. He later won again at the Isle of Man TT in 1978, and died in 1981 after a road accident in Warwickshire.
