Three Time Winner in the Championship Era

Mauri Rose, a three time Indianapolis 500 winner, finished third in the 1950 race, the first to count toward the World Championship.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Mauri Rose was one of the great Indianapolis drivers of his day. He won the AAA National Championship in 1936 and the Indianapolis 500 in 1941, 1947 and 1948, becoming the race's third three time winner.

When the Indianapolis 500 joined the new World Championship in 1950, he finished third from third on the grid, a podium in the first championship season. He started once more in 1951, his fifteenth and final Indianapolis 500, and was knocked out by an accident after 126 laps. Those two races are his World Championship record: two starts and one podium. He then retired to California and died in 1981.
