Podium on Debut, Then Penske's Formula One Venture

Mark Donohue finished third on his Formula One debut in 1971 and later raced for Penske until his fatal accident in Austria in 1975.

Raised in Summit, New Jersey, Mark Donohue built his reputation as both driver and engineer for Roger Penske in Trans Am and Can Am racing, and he won the 1972 Indianapolis 500. His Formula One debut came at the 1971 Canadian Grand Prix in a McLaren, and he finished third.

Penske formed its own Formula One team for the last two races of 1974 and a full season in 1975, with Donohue driving. That year he finished fifth in Sweden, and in a March he was fifth again at the British Grand Prix. Over the 1975 Austrian Grand Prix weekend he crashed heavily before the race; a track marshal was killed, and Donohue died from his injuries days later. He made 14 starts.
