Fifth in Brazil for ATS

Manfred Winkelhock raced in Formula One from 1980 to 1985, mostly with ATS, and his best result was fifth at the 1982 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Born in Waiblingen, Manfred Winkelhock won the Volkswagen Scirocco Cup in 1976 and moved into Formula Two in 1978. His first Formula One entry came with Arrows at the 1980 Italian Grand Prix, where he did not make the start.

He joined ATS for 1982 and finished fifth in Brazil in only his second race for the team, the best result of his career. He stayed with ATS through 1984, made a single appearance for Brabham, and drove for RAM in 1985, ending at the German Grand Prix with 47 starts. He died in August 1985 after a crash in a sports car race at Mosport.
