Karl Kling raced for Mercedes in 1954 and 1955, finishing second on his debut, and later ran the company's motorsport department.

Born in Giessen, Karl Kling worked for Daimler Benz from the mid 1930s. He made his World Championship debut at the 1954 French Grand Prix and finished second behind teammate Juan Manuel Fangio, the first podium for a German driver in the championship.

Later that season he set the fastest lap at the German Grand Prix after starting twenty third and finishing fourth. In 1955 he finished fourth in Argentina and third at the British Grand Prix, and his last race was the 1955 Italian Grand Prix, his 12th start. He then led Mercedes Benz in motorsport from 1956 to 1968 and died in 2003.
