The Doctor Who Won the Jim Clark Trophy

Jonathan Palmer raced in Formula One from 1983 to 1989 and won the 1987 Jim Clark Trophy for drivers of non turbo cars.

Born in Lewisham, Jonathan Palmer trained as a doctor at Guy's Hospital in London before committing to motor racing. Williams gave him his Formula One debut at the 1983 European Grand Prix, and he then spent a season with RAM and two with Zakspeed.

Moving to Tyrrell in 1987, he took fourth place at the Australian Grand Prix, his best finish, and won the Jim Clark Trophy, a class for cars without turbochargers held only that season. He stayed with Tyrrell until the 1989 Australian Grand Prix, his last race, finishing with 83 starts. He also raced Porsche sports cars, finishing second at Le Mans in 1985, and went on to run several British circuits through MotorSport Vision.
