Johnny Thomson started the Indianapolis 500 every year from 1953 to 1960, taking pole, the fastest lap and third place in 1959.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Johnny Thomson, known as the Flying Scot, won several midget and sprint car championships before moving up to championship cars. His first Indianapolis 500 in the World Championship era came in 1953, when he took part in two cars.

In 1955 he drove from thirty third on the grid to fourth place and scored points. His best year came in 1959, when he started from pole, set the fastest lap and finished third, and in 1960 he added fifth. That race was his ninth championship start. He died in September 1960.
