Johnny Boyd started six Indianapolis 500s while the race counted toward the World Championship and finished third in 1958 after leading.

Born in Fresno, California, Johnny Boyd raced championship cars from 1954 to 1966, making 56 starts in the AAA and USAC series. His first Indianapolis 500 came in 1955, when the race was still a round of the World Championship, and it ended early in the accident that claimed Bill Vukovich.

He returned every year through 1960, and his best day came in 1958, when he led 18 laps and finished third from eighth on the grid, the only championship podium of his career. His 1960 race brought his total to six World Championship starts. He also finished second in a championship car race at Milwaukee in 1959. He died in Fresno in 2003.
