Three Poles, No Victory

Jean Pierre Jarier raced in Formula One from 1971 to 1983, taking three pole positions and three podiums across a long and varied career.

Born in Charenton le Pont, near Paris, Jean Pierre Jarier came through French Formula Three and European Formula Two and made his Formula One debut with March at the 1971 Italian Grand Prix. His first full season came with Shadow in 1974, when he finished third at Monaco.

In 1975 he put the Shadow on pole for the first two races, in Argentina and Brazil, though a failure in the warm up kept him from starting in Argentina. His third pole came with Lotus in Canada in 1978. With Tyrrell in 1979 he added third places in South Africa and Britain. Later seasons with Ligier and Osella took him to the 1983 South African Grand Prix, his last race, after 135 starts with three podiums and no wins.
