Pole at Indianapolis in 1954

Jack McGrath raced the Indianapolis 500 six times while it counted toward the World Championship, finishing third twice and starting from pole in 1954.

Born in Los Angeles, Jack McGrath was a star of the midget cars at Gilmore Speedway and won the first California Roadster Association title in 1946. From 1950 to 1955 he started every Indianapolis 500, then a round of the World Championship.

He finished third in 1951, in a car shared with Manny Ayulo, and fifth in 1953, and was runner up in the national championship in 1952 and 1953. In 1954 he started from pole, set the fastest lap, led the first 44 laps and finished third. His sixth and last championship start came at the 1955 Indianapolis 500, where his engine failed during a long duel with Bill Vukovich. He was killed in a race later that year.
