Ivan Capelli raced in Formula One from 1985 to 1993 and finished second twice, in Portugal in 1988 and France in 1990.

Born in Milan, Ivan Capelli won the Italian Formula 3 title, the European Formula 3 championship and International Formula 3000 before Tyrrell gave him his Formula One debut at the 1985 European Grand Prix. Only two races later he finished fourth in Australia.

After brief outings with AGS, he joined March full time in 1987. The following year brought third in Belgium and second in Portugal, and in 1990, with the team now running as Leyton House, he finished second at the French Grand Prix. A season at Ferrari in 1992 and a single start for Jordan in 1993 closed his career at the South African Grand Prix, with 93 starts and three podiums. He later raced touring cars and worked as a television commentator.
