Mercedes Podium and Porsche's First Le Mans Win

Hans Herrmann raced in the World Championship between 1953 and 1969, finishing third for Mercedes in 1954, and won Le Mans for Porsche in 1970.

Born in Stuttgart, Hans Herrmann was a baker by trade before his racing career took off. He made his World Championship debut in a Veritas at the 1953 German Grand Prix and joined Mercedes for 1954, setting the fastest lap at the French Grand Prix and finishing third in Switzerland and fourth in Italy.

Later championship outings were occasional, in cars from Maserati, Cooper, BRM, Porsche, Brabham and Lotus, with sixth for Porsche at the 1960 Italian Grand Prix. His final entry came at the 1969 German Grand Prix, leaving him with 18 starts. In 1970 he drove a Porsche 917 to the marque's first overall win at Le Mans. He died in 2026.
