Gunnar Nilsson's Belgian victory

Gunnar Nilsson reached Formula 1 with Lotus in 1976, won the Belgian Grand Prix the following year, and died in 1978 at 29.

Gunnar Nilsson was born in Helsingborg, Sweden, on 20 November 1948. Before racing seriously he served as a submarine radio officer in the Swedish Navy and earned an engineering degree at Stockholm University. He began in Formula Vee in 1972, moved to Formula Super Vee with Ecurie Bonnier in 1973, and in 1975, only his second season of Formula Three, won the British Formula 3 championship.

Lotus signed him for 1976, and he made his debut at the South African Grand Prix. He qualified for every race of his rookie season and finished third in both Spain and Austria. He also won races in the World Sportscar and European Touring Car championships with BMW during this period.

Lotus kept him for 1977, and at the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder that June he scored his only World Championship win. He added a third place at the British Grand Prix and finished the season eighth in the standings. In two seasons he made 31 starts, all with Lotus, and scored 1 win, 1 fastest lap and 4 podiums.

Nilsson had signed with Arrows for 1978, but late in 1977 he was diagnosed with cancer, and he did not race again. He died on 20 October 1978. The following year a Gunnar Nilsson Memorial Trophy race was held in his honor, won by Alan Jones.
