A Podium in His Second Grand Prix

George Follmer raced one Formula One season for Shadow in 1973, finishing sixth and then third in his first two Grands Prix.

Born in Phoenix, George Follmer began in gymkhana events in Southern California and raced USAC championship cars, including three Indianapolis 500s. In 1973 he joined the new Shadow team and made his Formula One debut at the South African Grand Prix aged 39, the oldest debutant since the 1950s.

He finished sixth in that first race and third at the Spanish Grand Prix in his second, the only podium of his career. The rest of the season brought no further points, and his last race was the 1973 United States Grand Prix, his 12th start.
