Rookie of the Year at Indianapolis

George Amick finished second in his only Indianapolis 500 in 1958, starting twenty fifth, and was named Rookie of the Year.

Born in Vernonia, Oregon, George Amick began racing jalopies in the Northwestern United States before moving to midget cars, finishing in the top ten of the USAC national midget standings in each of his three seasons there. He later moved up to championship cars.

His one Indianapolis 500 came in 1958, when the race was a round of the World Championship. Driving an Epperly built roadster, he started twenty fifth and finished second, and was named the race's Rookie of the Year. It was his only championship start. He was killed in April 1959 in a crash during a USAC race at Daytona International Speedway.
