A Late Podium at Hockenheim

Éric Bernard raced in Formula One between 1989 and 1994, and his one podium came with Ligier at the 1994 German Grand Prix.

Born in Martigues, Éric Bernard won four French karting titles and moved into Formula Renault after the Winfield Racing School at Paul Ricard. Larrousse called him up for the 1989 French Grand Prix, his Formula One debut, and he stayed with the team through 1991.

His best season with the team was 1990, when he finished fourth at the British Grand Prix and sixth at Monaco and in Hungary. After two years away he returned with Ligier in 1994 and finished third at the German Grand Prix from fourteenth on the grid. He made his final appearance for Lotus at the European Grand Prix that year, his 45th start, and later raced sports cars, finishing runner up in the 1999 American Le Mans Series.
