Duane Carter started ten Indianapolis 500s while the race counted toward the World Championship, finishing third in 1953.

Born in Fresno, Duane Carter began in midget cars while studying at Fresno State and moved up to sprint cars, winning the Midwest division in 1950. That year he started his first Indianapolis 500, then part of the World Championship.

He scored championship points with fourth place in 1952, finished third in 1953 and was fourth again in 1954. After missing the race for three years he came back in 1959 and finished seventh. His last Indianapolis 500 of the championship era came in 1960, bringing his total to ten starts. He died in 1993.
