Don Freeland started every Indianapolis 500 from 1953 to 1960, finishing third in 1956 from twenty sixth on the grid.

Born in Los Angeles, Don Freeland served as a Navy mechanic during the Second World War and began racing afterwards. He started the Indianapolis 500 each year from 1953 to 1960, when it counted toward the World Championship.

He was seventh in 1954, and in 1955 he looked set for second until a transmission failure late in the race. A year later he drove from twenty sixth on the grid to third, his best result, and he was seventh again in 1958. His eighth and last championship start came in 1960. He died in 2007.
