Pole at Watkins Glen for Alfa Romeo

Bruno Giacomelli raced in Formula One from 1977 to 1983, taking a pole position and a podium with Alfa Romeo, and tried a brief comeback in 1990.

Born in Poncarale, Bruno Giacomelli won a British Formula 3 title in 1976 and the European Formula Two championship in 1978. McLaren gave him his Formula One debut at the 1977 Italian Grand Prix, and he raced a handful of times for the team in 1978 before joining Alfa Romeo.

His best moments came with the Italian team. He took pole position at the 1980 United States Grand Prix and finished third at the 1981 Caesars Palace Grand Prix, the only podium of his career. After a season with Toleman in 1983 he left Formula One, then returned in 1990 with the Life team, failing to make the grid in 12 attempts before the team withdrew after the Spanish Grand Prix. He made 69 starts in all.
