Bill Holland, the 1949 Indianapolis 500 winner, finished second in the 1950 race, the first to count toward the World Championship.

Born in Philadelphia, Bill Holland was an accomplished skater who tried out for the 1932 Olympics before making his name at Indianapolis. He won the Indianapolis 500 in 1949 and finished second in 1947 and 1948.

In 1950, when the race became part of the World Championship, he was running second, a lap down on Johnnie Parsons, when rain ended the race, and he was classified second. A year long AAA suspension followed his entry in a charity race in 1951, and he returned to Indianapolis in 1953 for his second and final championship start. He died in 1984.
