Montjuïc circuit

Former street circuit located on the Montjuïc mountain in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

The Hill Above Barcelona's Harbor

A street circuit through the wooded park on Montjuïc, high over Barcelona's port, it took turns with Jarama to stage the Spanish Grand Prix until 1975.

Montjuïc is the wooded hill that rises over Barcelona's harbor, and for decades its park roads doubled as a racetrack. Cars first raced there in 1932; the eastern course used a year later became the circuit itself and the home of the Penya Rhin Grand Prix. The lap ran counterclockwise and was really two circuits in one coat, slow on one side of the hill and very quick on the other, so a car set up for either half was wrong for the rest. Motorcycles shared the hill too: twelve Spanish motorcycle Grands Prix were held here, and a 24 hour motorcycle race ran from 1960 to 1982.

Chosen in 1968 to stage the Spanish Grand Prix, Montjuïc began sharing it with Jarama near Madrid the following year, Barcelona taking the odd years in a tidy arrangement between rival cities. Jackie Stewart won the first visit in 1969, and when he came back in 1971 his victory was Tyrrell's first as a constructor. Emerson Fittipaldi won for Lotus in 1973.

The 1975 race brought the story to a close. Many drivers believed the circuit was unsafe, and Fittipaldi pulled out in protest without starting. On lap 26 Rolf Stommelen's car left the track and five people were killed. The race was halted short of half distance and half points were given, so Jochen Mass was credited with his only championship win. Lella Lombardi finished sixth and became the only woman to score world championship points. Formula 1 never returned.

Montjuïc held 4 championship rounds in all, between 1969 and 1975. The park went on to become the Anella Olímpica, home to many venues of the 1992 Olympic Games, and in 2004 the city council marked the course of the old circuit. In 2007, for the circuit's 75th anniversary, Fittipaldi drove his Lotus 72 on the hill once more.
