Jeddah, Flat Out Beside the Red Sea

Following the Red Sea waterfront in Jeddah, the Corniche circuit is the fastest street track Formula 1 has ever raced on.

Street circuits are usually where Formula 1 goes to slow down. Jeddah is the exception. The Jeddah Corniche Circuit, which follows the city's waterfront Corniche beside the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia, is the fastest street course the sport has raced on, and in 2025 Max Verstappen took pole there at an average of 254.6 km/h, a record for a street track. The lap was drawn by Carsten Tilke, whose father is the circuit architect Hermann Tilke. At 6.174 km it is longer than any on the calendar except Spa Francorchamps and Las Vegas, and it has three DRS zones in a row.

The first Saudi Arabian Grand Prix took place on the 5th of December 2021, the penultimate round of that season, and Lewis Hamilton won from pole, with Verstappen second and Valtteri Bottas third. The race then moved to the early part of the year, held in March from 2022 to 2024 on the weekend before Ramadan, and since 2025 it has run in April, once Ramadan is over.

Jeddah has held 5 championship rounds, from 2021 to 2025, and they have rarely been comfortable for the winner. Verstappen won from fourth on the grid in 2022, a little over half a second ahead of Charles Leclerc. A year later Sergio Pérez won from pole while Verstappen came through from fifteenth to second, and Verstappen won from pole in 2024, which gives him two wins here, the most of any driver. In 2025 Oscar Piastri started second and beat Verstappen by under three seconds.

The circuit leads other lives too. A shorter 3.450 km layout held the final round of the World Touring Car Cup in 2022, and since 2025 Formula E has raced on a 3.001 km version, cut short with a hairpin and chicanes: Jeddah in a more patient mood.
